Türkiye and Canada have embarked on a strategic partnership designed to enhance trade, investment, defense cooperation, and diplomatic coordination in response to increasing geopolitical uncertainties. Announced during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Ankara, this agreement signifies a new chapter in the longstanding relationship between the two NATO allies, which dates back 83 years.
During their meeting, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Carney outlined a three-year action plan focusing on four primary areas: trade, investment and innovation; energy and climate cooperation; defense and security; and government dialogue and people-to-people relations. This partnership aims to fortify economic ties, promote investment, advance energy projects, and foster collaboration in natural resources and emerging technologies. Both nations reiterated their commitment to upholding shared principles, including democracy, human rights, individual freedoms, and the rule of law.
At the heart of this agreement is defense cooperation. Türkiye’s Presidency of Defence Industries and Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs have signed a memorandum of understanding to support joint ventures between their defense sectors and explore further collaboration opportunities. Additionally, the leaders have pledged to synchronize their efforts to promote peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic region and beyond, with a specific focus on Ukraine, the South Caucasus, and the Middle East, including Gaza.
To ensure sustained engagement, the two countries will establish an annual Türkiye-Canada Strategic Dialogue and continue sessions of the Joint Economic and Trade Committee, along with political-military and counterterrorism consultations. This partnership also includes plans to enhance cooperation on consular affairs, migration, mutual legal assistance, and extradition. Both governments aim to foster cultural exchanges and strengthen connections between their citizens and diaspora communities.
The foreign ministers of Türkiye and Canada will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the three-year roadmap, ensuring that the commitments translate into tangible outcomes. This agreement reflects the shared ambition of both countries to deepen economic and security ties, address common international challenges, and create new opportunities for businesses, investors, and citizens.
