Trump Proposes Renaming New Mexico to ‘New America’ Amid Controversy

by admin477351

US President Donald Trump has once again proposed renaming the state of New Mexico to “New America,” arguing that such a change would bolster national pride and potentially enhance property values and incomes. Trump made his renewed call for the name change through a social media post on October 19, stating the state’s name should better reflect its American identity.

This idea was initially introduced by Trump in September when he shared an altered map featuring the name “New America” while endorsing a Republican congressional candidate. He suggested that the decision would ultimately rest with the residents of New Mexico.

However, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has firmly rejected Trump’s proposal. She emphasized the historical significance of the state’s current name and cautioned against politicizing it. Governor Grisham reiterated her administration’s focus on critical issues such as healthcare, housing, childcare, and education access, rather than on renaming initiatives.

Trump’s suggestion comes in the wake of other geographical renaming efforts undertaken during his second term, including the federal recognition of “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico and the reversion of Alaska’s Denali back to Mount McKinley. Despite these precedents, no official action has been taken to alter New Mexico’s name.

In his social media post, Trump also raised questions about the integrity of elections in New Mexico, alleging electoral misconduct without providing evidence to support his claims. These allegations have not been substantiated and add another layer of controversy to his renaming proposal.
