The U.S. aviation authorities have mandated inspections for Boeing 737 Max planes to check for potential cracks in a critical fuselage component. This directive will impact around 471 aircraft, with the inspection process slated to begin in September. The focus of these inspections is the bear strap, a crucial structural sheet that reinforces the fuselage around the exit doors. This move comes in light of similar cracks found in older versions of the Boeing 737 Next Generation, which had already led to inspections of those models.

No instances of cracks have been reported in the 737 Max fleet to date. However, regulators highlight that the aircraft’s design and manufacturing processes are similar to those of the Next Generation models, suggesting a possibility of similar issues arising. The regulatory body emphasized that undetected cracks could compromise the structural integrity of the aircraft, posing significant safety risks.
