Canada is on the verge of gaining observer status in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a collaborative effort spearheaded by Japan, the United Kingdom, and Italy to create a sixth-generation stealth fighter jet by the year 2035. This development is expected to be formally announced at the upcoming Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom.
As an observer, Canada will have the opportunity to engage in discussions and obtain valuable insights into the GCAP without any immediate financial obligations. This status signifies a strategic move for Canada, as it seeks to enhance its defense collaborations with European and Asian partners while broadening its military cooperation network. Canada’s participation as an observer marks the first instance of a country outside the original trio joining the initiative in this capacity.
