Australia is bolstering its support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict, committing an additional $60 million across military, energy, and humanitarian sectors. This move underscores Australia’s dedication to upholding international law and addressing global security concerns stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
During a meeting in New York, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed the details of the aid package, which includes $45 million in military equipment from the Australian Defence Force. An additional $10 million is allocated to support Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, while $5 million will go towards humanitarian efforts.
The aid announcement coincides with a new 10-year bilateral security agreement between Australia and Ukraine. This pact aims to enhance military cooperation through increased training and collaborative efforts in developing air-defense systems, missiles, and drones. Prime Minister Albanese emphasized that the agreement’s relevance will extend beyond the current conflict, providing a framework for continued collaboration during peacetime.
With this latest contribution, Australia’s total support for Ukraine since the onset of the conflict will reach approximately $1.9 billion. President Zelenskyy expressed his appreciation for the strengthened ties between the two nations, noting the potential benefits in security and trade sectors.
