PM Mark Carney to Rally in Alberta for Canadian Unity Before Referendum

by admin477351

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to participate in two rallies in Alberta, advocating for the province to remain part of Canada ahead of a critical referendum. Scheduled for October 15 and 16 in Calgary and Edmonton, these “Forever Canadian” rallies aim to sway public opinion before Alberta’s October 19 vote on its future relationship with Canada.

The campaign, spearheaded by former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk, seeks to maintain the province’s unity with the rest of the country. The upcoming referendum will address several significant issues, including constitutional and immigration topics, alongside the pivotal question of whether Alberta should consider a future separation referendum.

Carney, who has roots in Alberta, has expressed concerns about the possible consequences of separation, highlighting the potential for a prolonged and uncertain process. In a Thanksgiving message filmed at his former high school in Edmonton, he emphasized the importance of national unity and pointed to federal plans for major projects in Alberta, such as a proposed pipeline to Canada’s West Coast. He argued that cooperation on a national level is crucial for advancing economic and infrastructure priorities.

The prime minister also noted that Canadians are more resilient when united, especially as the country navigates economic and security challenges. His presence at the rallies underscores his commitment to keeping Alberta within the national fold.

In addition to Carney’s efforts, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre is expected to speak in support of Canadian unity at a Calgary conference on October 16. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is also scheduled to address the event, further highlighting the significance of the upcoming vote and the widespread political attention it has garnered.
