In a significant show of support for Ukraine, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an increase in aid for the nation’s air defense and drone capabilities during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to Calgary. This commitment forms part of a broader US-led initiative to bolster Ukraine’s military through a package valued at C$350 million (US$253 million). The aid arrives as Ukraine continues to grapple with an escalation in Russian missile and drone attacks.
Alongside military support, Canada is extending C$450 million in loan guarantees to aid in the strengthening of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing is intended to facilitate repairs to facilities damaged by ongoing conflict, enhance energy storage capabilities, and ensure reliable electricity supplies to critical services, including healthcare centers.
In a move to solidify long-term cooperation, Carney and Zelenskyy signed an agreement to work toward a “hundred-year partnership.” This strategic alignment will focus on defense, critical minerals, energy, and other key areas, underscoring the depth of the bilateral relationship between Canada and Ukraine.
Canada also committed to directing 30% of its new domestic drone production to Ukraine, a decision that Zelenskyy indicated would bolster Ukrainian forces on the battlefield and enhance civilian protection. This initiative highlights Canada’s role in supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing tensions in the region.
Looking ahead, President Zelenskyy is anticipated to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York later this month. This meeting could occur on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, as diplomatic efforts persist in seeking a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
