Children as young as four or five years can begin exploring yoga through playful and basic activities. As they mature, particularly between the ages of six and twelve, they can gradually advance to longer poses, breathing exercises, and more structured yoga routines. The primary aim of yoga for children is not achieving perfection but rather enhancing their concentration, flexibility, self-confidence, and awareness of their thoughts and emotions.

Regular yoga sessions can offer several benefits for children, such as improving their flexibility and balance, encouraging better posture, enhancing focus and concentration, managing stress and emotions, and promoting relaxation and mindful breathing. Some of the yoga poses beneficial for children include the Tree Pose (Vrikshasana), where they stand on one leg while placing the other foot on the inner leg and stretching their arms upward. This pose helps improve balance, concentration, and confidence, while strengthening the legs. Another pose, the Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana), involves moving between arching and rounding the back while on hands and knees, which improves spine flexibility and encourages controlled breathing. The Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana), where children sit with the soles of their feet together and move their knees like butterfly wings, enhances flexibility and supports a comfortable sitting posture. Lastly, the Child’s Pose (Balasana) allows children to relax by sitting back with arms stretched forward, releasing tension and practicing calm breathing.

Incorporating yoga into daily routines can become a positive habit for children, aiding them in staying active while cultivating patience, focus, and inner peace. Starting with a simple routine early on can significantly support healthier physical and mental development.
