Mark Carney Advocates for Enhanced Canada-Caribbean Trade at Commonwealth Summit

by admin477351

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized the importance of expanding trade and economic cooperation between Canada and Caribbean nations, highlighting the untapped potential in their current trade relationship. Speaking at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, Carney pointed out that despite strong historical ties and growing economic connections, trade between Canada and the Caribbean remains below its potential.

Carney’s remarks underscore Canada’s strategic efforts to diversify its international economic partnerships and reduce its economic reliance on the United States. With a large Caribbean-origin population in Canada and existing trade frameworks, Carney sees a robust foundation for enhanced collaboration. During his visit, he engaged in bilateral discussions with Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who acknowledged Canada’s role as a middle power and welcomed its commitment to strengthening the Commonwealth.

Joining Carney in these discussions was Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, who participated in talks with leaders from various Caribbean countries, including the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago. The discussions centered around trade, investment, and diplomatic cooperation, which are key priorities for the Commonwealth meeting.

Currently, Canada conducts around $100 billion in trade with Commonwealth nations, which collectively represent approximately 2.7 billion people across 56 member countries. This highlights the significant potential for Canada to expand its economic influence and strengthen diplomatic ties within the Commonwealth framework.

Carney’s initiative is part of a broader Canadian strategy to engage more deeply with Commonwealth countries, leveraging existing relationships and building new economic links. By fostering stronger trade ties with Caribbean nations, Canada aims to create a more balanced and resilient economic landscape for the future.
