Canada Unlikely to Reach Trade Deal With US Before Midterms, Says Carney

by admin477351

Canada is unlikely to secure a trade agreement with the United States before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections on November 3, according to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Speaking before a Liberal caucus meeting, Carney emphasized the importance of reaching a deal that benefits both nations while primarily serving Canada’s interests.

Carney’s remarks come amid renewed discussions between Canada and the U.S. after earlier negotiations stalled in August. The collapse was attributed to Canada’s objections to U.S. conditions perceived as restrictive on Ottawa’s ability to engage in trade deals with other countries. Additionally, Canada raised concerns over potential adverse impacts on French-language requirements and its struggling automotive industry.

Following the breakdown in talks, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on several Canadian goods, prompting Canada to enact matching retaliatory tariffs. Recent discussions have focused on reducing U.S. tariffs impacting Canadian steel and automobiles; however, formal negotiations between trade representatives have not resumed.

Sources familiar with the discussions remain uncertain about the likelihood of reaching an agreement before the elections. The ongoing trade dispute has become a political issue in the United States, with some Republican candidates voicing concerns about the tariffs’ impact on businesses and communities along the border.
