In one of its most significant drone operations since the conflict began, Ukraine has reportedly launched a large-scale attack against Russia, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals and sparking a major fire at a distribution center near Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry reported intercepting 1,478 Ukrainian drones in a 24-hour timeframe, which they claim is the highest daily number to date. These figures have not been independently verified.
The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, stated that approximately 600 drones targeted the Moscow area, with 201 being destroyed. The attack led to the fatality of one person in the region. A significant blaze erupted at a Wildberries distribution warehouse located near Podolsk, about 25 miles south of central Moscow. Ukraine’s military reported that the facility, spanning roughly 250,000 square meters, suffered extensive damage. Ukrainian officials have indicated that several Wildberries facilities have been targeted due to their alleged use in military logistics.
This development underscores Ukraine’s advancing capability in executing long-range strikes, while Russia persists in utilizing drones and missiles to assault Ukrainian urban areas and infrastructure. Russian attacks have also claimed the lives of at least seven individuals in Ukraine, with casualties reported in locations such as Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile strike on Kyiv left six people injured and ignited fires, including one at a significant book market, where numerous businesses reportedly lost their entire inventory.
In a related incident, a Spanish fighter jet, part of a NATO patrol, shot down a suspected Russian drone after it entered the airspace of Romania, as confirmed by NATO officials. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure. He noted that over the past week, Moscow had launched more than 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine.
This escalation in drone and missile use by both nations highlights the increasing reliance on long-range weaponry, raising the potential for more casualties and destruction away from the immediate battlefronts.
