Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is embarking on a two-day visit to Canada aimed at enhancing bilateral ties, boosting trade, and strengthening cooperation in the fields of energy and defense. His visit commences in Toronto, where he plans to tour the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. This visit signals Turkey’s interest in leveraging Canada’s expertise in nuclear energy to bolster its own civilian nuclear energy capabilities and improve energy security.

During his time in Canada, Fidan will also engage with business leaders, academics, and civil society representatives. These meetings are expected to discuss potential avenues for investment and economic collaboration between Turkey and Canada, both of which are NATO allies. The talks are intended to explore opportunities for expanding economic cooperation, reflecting a mutual interest in advancing shared economic goals.

In Ottawa, Fidan is scheduled to meet with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. Their discussions will likely focus on elevating their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, facilitating high-level exchanges, and addressing trade barriers. A key item on the agenda is the pursuit of progress on a much-anticipated free trade agreement, which has been under discussion for some time.

Security issues of both regional and global significance are expected to be central to the dialogue, including the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, tensions in the Middle East, and maritime security challenges in the Strait of Hormuz. Turkey is anticipated to advocate for diplomatic solutions and sustained engagement with all relevant stakeholders to address these complex issues.

As Turkey and Canada continue to expand their bilateral trade, defense cooperation, increased air connectivity, and the presence of a substantial Turkish diaspora in Canada further support this growth. This visit underscores the commitment of both nations to deepen their strategic and economic partnership.
