OpenNebula Systems has unveiled OpenNebula 7.4 “Helix,” marking the latest iteration of its open-source cloud and virtualization platform. Aimed at simplifying cloud management for enterprises, this update is particularly tailored to meet the increasing demands of AI infrastructure. A significant feature of this release is the revamped Sunstone management interface, which is designed to provide cloud administrators with a more efficient and user-friendly experience. Key enhancements include better navigation, new resource inspection tools, reorganized settings, and GUI-based management of VirtioFS, all aimed at optimizing daily cloud operations.

The 7.4 version further enhances automation capabilities with several new tools and improvements. OneSwap has been introduced for bulk VMware migrations, along with advancements in OneDRS for resource scheduling, intelligent selection of datastores, and storage migration. Additionally, OneKS has been improved for managed Kubernetes deployments, aiding organizations in modernizing their infrastructure while minimizing operational complexity.

To cater to AI and high-performance computing workloads, the platform now supports Axelera AI accelerators and offers native NVIDIA GPU integration within the Slurm appliance. It also includes automated orchestration of Bare Metal as a Service (BMaaS) via the NVIDIA Infrastructure Controller (NICo). Networking capabilities have been enhanced with VLAN Group-level authorization and support for Open vSwitch Switchdev, which are designed to boost performance and ensure secure multi-tenant environments.

Backup and data protection are also strengthened in this release through updates to the OpenNebula Backup Exporter (OneBEX), which now includes Selected Disk Backups. The platform also introduces production-ready support for Ubuntu 26.04. Additional improvements encompass storage, monitoring, networking, high availability, and compatibility with VMware.

Alongside the platform’s update, OpenNebula Systems has launched OpenNebula Apps (OneApps) 7.4.0. This includes updated virtual appliances, support for AArch64 in OneKS, compatibility with Alpine Linux 3.24, and deployment enhancements for enterprise cloud environments. According to the firm, OpenNebula 7.4 is designed to simplify cloud operations, accelerate the modernization of infrastructure, and support the next wave of AI-driven private and sovereign cloud deployments.
