On the 41st anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 bombing, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the necessity of ongoing vigilance to prevent violent extremism. The bombing, which occurred on June 23, 1985, remains one of Canada’s most devastating terrorist attacks. It resulted in the tragic loss of all 329 individuals onboard, including 268 Canadian citizens, when the aircraft, also known as the Kanishka, was blown up near Ireland.
Memorial ceremonies took place in several cities including Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, as well as in Ahakista, Ireland, to honor the victims. During these events, Carney stressed the importance of remembering the attack and strengthening efforts against violent extremism. He highlighted the Canadian government’s initiatives to bolster national security and disrupt terrorist activities, which include new laws targeting hate propaganda, extremist symbols, and community threats.
The remembrance ceremonies saw participation from government officials, law enforcement representatives, and members of the Indian diplomatic community. India’s High Commissioner to Canada joined the tributes, underscoring the significance of remembering the impact of terrorism and the necessity of holding perpetrators accountable.
Carney reiterated Canada’s commitment to collaborating with international partners in the fight against terrorism, ensuring the safety and protection of its citizens. Community organizations also urged for the consistent enforcement of laws designed to combat intimidation and extremist behavior.
